5 Gluten Free Snacks that Don’t Taste Like Actual Dog Food

I’m a recent university graduate who has been gluten free for about 9 months, and although I always recommend that others make the switch as well, a lot of gluten free food tastes truly horrible.  While it seems like a good gluten free bread may be a lost cause for most of us, there are some saving graces that I genuinely love to eat.

Why go gluten free in the first place?  For some, it’s celiac or gluten intolerance, for some, it’s to reduce inflammation from chronic diseases, and for others, it’s simply a dietary choice to help one absorb vitamins better and feel more energized overall.  Whatever your reasoning, you’ve got to try some of these snacks and check out these awesome brands- it is possible to have the best of both worlds while being gluten free.

1. Schär Gluten Free Crackers

These crackers are the closest ones I’ve found to the real thing that dont look like birdseed.  They’re like a mix between Saltines & Club crackers that work well with a variety of toppings.  My favorite combination is adding some soft brie cheese and raspberry jam to make the perfect bite. As an added bonus, they come in little packs of six, which works great for bringing snacks on the go.

2. Enjoy Life Soft-Baked Chewy Bars

These bars get eaten in record time the second they land in my pantry.  The absolute best flavor is “cocoa loco”- it tastes just like brownies!  On that note, this brand also has plenty of sweet snacks like brownie bites and soft cookies that taste great and don’t make you feel like you’re missing out.

3. Peanut Butter-Apple Pitas

While this option requires a bit more work, the payoff is totally worth it.  Simply toss some thinly sliced apples in cinnamon, and load onto a white corn tortilla with some peanut butter.  Then, heat up butter in a small saucepan and cook until golden brown.  The apples come out soft and the buttery tortilla is irresistible. Casa Bonita makes the best gluten free tortillas that last forever in the fridge.

4. Lentil Chips

Although potato chips are gluten free, the excess of oil and salt makes it a difficult snack to have often.  Instead, I go for lentil chips- they’re lighter, less calories, and don’t break you out with oils.  My favorites are Enjoy Life’s Dill & Sour Cream Lentil Chips and The Daily Crave’s Himalayan Pink Salt Lentil Chips.

5. Popcorn

No, I’m not talking about microwaved greasy popcorn, although I still like to enjoy some Orville Redenbacher’s from time to time, I’m talking about brands like Boom Chicka Pop and Popcorn Indiana.  These are the ultimate snack because they can satisfy salty cravings and sweet tooths at the same time.  The best flavors are Boom Chicka Pop’s Kettlecorn & Popcorn Indiana’s Movie Theater Butter.

Hopefully this list helps you to expand your snack horizons and realize that gluten-free foods can still be just as fulfilling as the average diet; it’s all about knowing which foods to put in your cart.
